Sustainability

The farming operation and Packhouse are SIZA certified. We are committed to ensure that we adhere, practise, and develop on the eight principles of SIZA’s Ethical trade compliance and Environmental Audit.

The SIZA improvement process has been designed to ensure Ethical Trade compliance from all certified suppliers in South-Africa. The goal is to have a commitment of continued improvement of labour and environmental conditions on all farms in a practical and comprehensive manner which has the potential to benefit businesses and impact positively on hundreds of thousands of employees.

In support for SIZA’s long term vision to include environmental stewardship as an integral offering within sustainability together with the WWF-SA has developed environmental standards and appropriate tools to support improvement in environmental indicators measuring and management.

Quality Control

The Packhouse and farm is PPECB and DALRRD registered and certified.

Quality Assurance addresses the APS Act of 1990 related to “standards and regulations regarding the control of the export of citrus fruit”

  • Specifically, internal & external fruit quality, packaging & labelling
  • Quality refers to both cosmetic appearance and eating quality.

The PPECB provides a diverse range of services to registered pack houses and producers which ensures they meet relevant standards relating to regulated agricultural food products intended for export. These services include Food Safety Audits, food safety testing services and product inspections.

The PPECB‘s product inspection services are performed by inspectors, stationed across South Africa, who deliver consistent quality inspections on citrus to ensure the produce complies with minimum export standards.

Burger Boerdery & Burgpak is registered with DALLRRD as an approved producer and Packhouse.

Burger Boerdery registered PUC no’s  D12034 and D16127.  Burgpak registered PHC no is D7237.

Internal Quality Department

As a responsible Packhouse we pride ourselves that we want to deliver the best quality fruit to market, therefore we have our own internal quality department which consists of:

  • Quality Assurance of final product packed. We have dedicated staff that walks the floor of the Packhouse and uses a prescribed method to check and record different cartons during the day. This is to ensure that the product bound for export complies with the Export Standard, the customer’s request and the Packhouse own quality standards.
  • In house laboratory. The laboratory is used to measure internal fruit quality, external appearance and follows procedures as set out by the PPECB and our partner exporter. We test for internal sugar, acids, and juice percentage. We also check colour, and other external characteristics of the fruit.
  • All fruit that arrives at the Packhouse is also inspected by our quality control staff to ensure that potential dangers to export markets are identified, reported and procedures regarding this is followed.
  • On the packing line we have two quality control stations. The staff is trained to recognize any potential dangers to export countries, and deal with the fruit as per the prescribed rules.
  • We have a state-of-the-art Grading system that is controlled by the Packhouse Manager to ensure that the best fruit are selected for packing into cartons bound for the export market.
